Golden Bandicoot

 

 

Characteristics

The Golden Bandicoot is a small golden brown marsupial. It has a long pointed head with a compacted body. The average size of the Golden Bandicoot is 24.5cm long and a weight range between 300 to 670 grams.

 

Behaviour

The Golden Bandicoot sleeps during the day while it is hidden under a nest of twigs, ground litter, leaves and grass. During the day it roams around finding food and mates.

 

Diet

The Golden Bandicoot is an omnivore which feeds off arthropods; this includes beetles, termites, ants, larvae, spiders and centipedes. It has also been reported eating eggs and small reptiles.

 

Predators

The Golden Bandicoots doesn’t have a great deal of predators. The 2 main ones includes feral cats and dogs; others are unknown but the greatest impact would be from burn off.

 

Distribution and Abundance

The Golden Bandicoot can be located in the top part of the Northern Territory, also near the NT border in Western Australia. Abundance is unknown but it is categorised as vulnerable.

 

Habitat

The Golden Bandicoot lives in a range of habitats including rugged sandstone woodlands, and rainforests and on the Northern Territory mainland.

 

Impacts

Fire regimes have a massive impact on the Golden Bandicoot. Because of the changed fire regimes Golden Bandicoots are becoming extinct.

 

Management

There is no conservation status.
