Black Rat
Characteristics
The Black Rat is medium sized, slender, and brownish or greyish black with coarse fur and a long, slim, hairy, scaly tail. The tail is approximately 110% longer than the combined length of the head and body.
Habitat
The Black Rat is found primarily around human habitations such as barns, warehouses and buildings mainly in residential areas. It is abundant in the south eastern United States, particularly in seaports. They are very agile climbers, living in upper portions of buildings and trees when there are Norway Rats around. When Norway Rats are absent, Black Rats will burrow under buildings.
