Barking Owl
Characteristics
The characteristics of the Barking Owl are that it is a medium sized hawk owl. This owl has large yellow eyes used for nocturnal hunting. These owls lack the heart shaped head like the Tyto owls (Barn Owls). Adult barking owls have grey-brown above and white spots on the wings
Behaviour
Barking Owls raise a single brood a season. The female incubates the eggs while the male supplies food. The nest is located in a hollow in a tree trunk.
Diet
Barking Owls eat rabbits, rodents, insects and birds including magpies, white cockatoos, house sparrows and blue faced honey eaters.
Predators
A predator of the Barking Owl is the fox.
Distribution and Abundance
There are less than 50 pair of Barking Owls in Australia.
Habitat
The Barking Owl lives in the bushland and forest of Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Impacts
It is killing off the rabbits.
Management
Barking Owls are an endangered species and, consequently, are being moved to a protected area.
